About Scribd

The unlimited audiobook service, Scribd, has actually been around for quite a while now, since 2007 in fact. Their service isn’t limited to only offering audiobooks they also offer ebooks, magazines, documents and sheet music. In our Scribd review we are going to focus solely on their audiobooks offering which they launched back in late 2014. Scribd and their direct competitor Playster are sometimes referred to as the Netflix of audiobooks due to their unlimited audiobook subscriptions. You can get 30-days free audiobook membership with both of these companies when you register a new account.

Keep reading our Scribd review to find out how to benefit from their free trial, as well as what we loved and didn’t like so much.

Scribd offers the same 30-days free trial that most of it’s competitors do. This enables you to give their product a decent test before committing to a monthly subscription cost. The Scribd free trial includes audiobooks, ebooks and all other media offered from them. With a growing library, now is the perfect time to sign-up for a free trial with Scribd to see if this is the best audiobook service for you. To sign up and start enjoying Scribd audiobooks follow this step by step guide below.

How to use the Scribd free trial:

  3. Register with Facebook, Google or Email (full name, email and a password for your account)
  4. Enter your payment details (don’t worry you won’t be charged)
  5. Select interests to get recommendations (1 or more need to be selected)
  6. Now you can listen to audiobooks on Scribd for free for 30 days!

Scribd requires you to enter one of you cards details for verification reasons. You won’t be charged. This also allows you to continue listening without being interrupted after the Scribd free trial has ended.

Subscription Plans

Scribd have changed their membership options twice now! They started out as an unlimited reading and listening service for a monthly fee, then they changed to credits like Audible. Now in 2018 Scribd has reverted back to it’s unlimited approach. At $8.99 for a Scribd subscription we see them as one of the best audiobook services on the market. We’d directly compare them with Playster as they offer more than just audiobooks, as well as the all you can listen to membership.

This main Scribd membership plan allows you to benefit from all of their offered media. If you abuse their service they may restrict reading or listening to a smaller selected library, until your next monthly payment. It has never happened to us, but they state it in the FAQs sections so it’s good to be aware of.

Gift Cards

The Scribd membership makes for a great gift for colleagues, friends and family members. Scribd gift cards come in 3 different packages, starting at 3 months, then 6 months and finally a 12 months subscription deal. Check out the prices in the table below.

3 Months $25
6 Months $50
12 Months $100

Scribd Store

As Scribd’s audiobook service has been around since late 2014 it isn’t as extensive as or Audible. However, they still host over 100,000 audiobook titles. This can vary depending on which country you register and listen in.

In the Scribd store, they categorise by best sellers and separate genres that they call interests. Once you have started listening to one or two audiobooks you will then start to get recommendations from Scribd. This is nice as you can check to see if any of their picks interest you. Being unlimited to listen to whatever you want means that you can test a title and if you don’t enjoy it, you can change completely.

Scribd doesn’t have as many categories as other audiobook apps. However, we kind of like that, as you can then drill down into best sellers or new releases rather than another big subcategory. If you are looking for business or biography audiobooks we highly recommend a monthly Scribd membership.

Best Audiobooks on Scribd

You may think that Scribd doesn’t offer much when looking at their categories. We decided to compile 10 of the best audiobooks on Scribd in this list below. It was hard to decide which audiobooks to include here as Scribd do offer a strong selection.

  • Unbroken
  • The Lean Startup
  • A Game of Thrones
  • Shoe Dog
  • The Alice Network
  • The Hunger Games
  • The Hobbit
  • The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck
  • The Name of the Wind
  • Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine

Feel free to add any extra audiobook additions that you have enjoyed when using Scribd in the comments section below. We love to know what our reader’s top titles are.

Scribd Audiobooks

Device compatibility

Scribd audiobooks can be streamed and downloaded across many different devices. You can listen on any internet browser on desktop and mobile. You also then have the ability to download the Scribd free app. Without signing up you can still browse their library, even listen to audiobook samples, to judge whether or not Scribd will be a good fit for you. Obviously, you can go one step further and sign-up using their 30-days free trial.

Scribd App

Next, it’s time to see how the Scribd app compares to the other audiobooks apps on the market. First of all the Scribd app can be downloaded on all iOS and Android devices. It isn’t limited to just those devices, which is great. If you have a Kindle Fire you can also benefit from the Scribd app as long as it runs Fire OS 4 or later.

Scribd’s mobile app has a really simple, professional looking layout. Due to this we actually preferred it to some of the other audiobook apps. Scribd’s search function makes it really simple to find what you are looking for. You can search for specific titles and authors. If you are unsure of what you want to listen to just type in your favourite genre and then decide that way. The Scribd app syncs with the website version so you won’t lose your bookmark if you switch between the two.

Downloading new audiobooks is easy to do using the app. Just make sure that you are connected to WiFi, as not to eat into your data. In the account tab go to ‘audiobook preferences’, there you will see that you can turn ‘use cellular data’ on and off. It’s best to keep this off at all times.

Help & Support

The Scribd help center is full of general information, relevant updates, customer queries, and tutorials. You have a handy search bar if you want to save time sifting through the different categories.

Scribd’s customer service team have an extremely quick email response rate, so if you want to get in touch with them we’d suggest that way. Their support email address is [email protected]. They don’t actually offer telephone support, but as we said it’s not entirely needed, just a nice extra.

Scribd vs Audible

So, we’re almost at the end of our Scribd website review. Before we wrap up we wanted to dedicate this part to Scribd vs Audible. If you have been using audiobooks for a while then you would have already heard of Amazon’s Audible product.

There are a few main differences between the two audiobook services. These are that Scribd offers an unlimited audiobooks membership, unlike Audible’s credit system. Secondly, with Scribd’s subscription, you also get access to ebooks, music notes and magazines. After that, Audible does house more than double the number of audiobooks that Scribd offers.

The final difference is, of course, the price. A monthly Scribd membership will cost you $8.99 per month, whereas Audible costs £7.99/$14.95.

Luckily for us and you, we get to test both of these audiobook apps for free for a whole month. To sign-up for the Scribd trial or Audible’s click on one of the buttons below.

Is Scribd Worth it?

As already detailed in our Scribd review, we love the product and the price! To answer the question above, yes, Scribd is worth it!

Their main competitor is Playster due to both of them offering unlimited membership plans. Scribd definitely comes out on top here as their monthly fee is almost half!

Scribd is perfect for people that love listening to audiobooks as well as reading. Whilst the Scribd store isn’t as big others audiobook apps at just $8.99 a month with unlimited access it really is a steal. For their free trial, you can sign up here. We recommend testing the Scribd unlimited membership before paying fully each month.

Similar to all of audiobook services you have to go to Scribd on your desktop to cancel. Once logged in, go to the account settings page, there you will see a button saying ‘end my membership’. You will see confirmation pages and receive an email noting that your Scribd subscription has been cancelled.

Obviously you won’t get to keep your downloaded audiobooks if you do cancel your membership, like you do with That’s not what the Scribd unlimited subscription is designed for though.

I tried other unlimited audiobook memberships, but Scribd was my favorite. The annual pricing is a great way to save some extra bucks too!
